On Sunday 26th May, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for York Outer, Luke Charters, appeared on BBC One’sPolitics North to discuss the upcoming general election and important local issues.
Luke set out Labour’s agenda for change, detailing the party’s fully costed plans to turn the country around. He told the BBC’s Tim Iredale about Labour’s plans to fix education by recruiting more teachers and cut NHS waiting lists, issues that have been raised again and and with Luke on the doorsteps of York Outer.
Luke also discussed the state of the region’s roads, pointing out that pothole repair funding in UK has reduced more than majority of other OECD nations under the Tories (according to Local Government Association analysis). Figures show that Labour councils are investing 83 per cent more per head on structural maintenance of local roads, including resurfacing and pothole repair.
The recent York and North Yorkshire mayoral election, as well as past general election voting patterns, clearly show that only Luke Charters for Labour can win in York Outer against the Conservatives.
The episode is available to watch again here.
Labour’s 6 First Steps
- Deliver economic stability with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.
- Cut NHS waiting times with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-doms.
- Launch a new Border Security Command with hundreds of new specialist investigators and counter-terror powers to smash criminal gangs and strengthen our borders.
- Set up Great British Energy , a publicly-owned clean power company, to cut bills for good and boost energy security, paid for by a windfall tax on oil and gas giants.
- Crack down on antisocial behaviour, with more neighbourhood police paid for by ending wasteful contracts, tough new penalties for offenders, and a new network of youth hubs.
- Recruit 6,500 new teachers in key subjects to set children up for life, work and the future, paid for by ending tax breaks for private schools
